A gas leak that closed a portion of West 38th Street in Millcreek and caused a brief evacuation of some Millcreek residents from their homes Wednesday has been repaired.

The street has reopened, a township spokesperson said Thursday. It had been closed for a time Wednesday afternoon and evening between Lancaster and Amherst roads while National Fuel Gas repaired the line and restored service for customers.

The leak in the 3100 block of West 38th Street was caused by a break in a gas line reported at about 12:15 p.m., said National Fuel Gas spokeswoman Carly Manino. The break was caused by a third-party excavator digging in the area, she said.

Gas was shut off in the area, and a handful of residences were briefly evacuated. Occupants were allowed to return to their homes early Wednesday afternoon.

The leak was repaired and service was restored to all customers Wednesday evening, Manino said.

Millcreek Township police and fire personnel also responded to the leak and helped secure the scene.
