For mine operators who focus on sustainable operations, Komatsu’s new WE1850-3 wheel loader is part of the new generation 3 series, a multi-functional loading tool that can be used for main line production and bucket backup as well as cleaning and ramp construction.
Komatsu is renaming all of its hybrid wheel loader products as part of its ongoing process of integrating its traditional brand into Komatsu One. The rebranding will transfer traditional brands such as P&H L1150, P&H L1350, P&H L1850 and P&H L2350 loaders to Komatsu.
“Our large hybrid loaders have been using the legendary LeTourneau and P&H names for many years, but we are proud to be able to transfer the product line to the Komatsu brand,” said Brian Fox, Vice President of Mining Products.
"Since Komatsu acquired Joy Global in 2017, we have been investing heavily in factories and new product development. The goal is to introduce Komatsu's quality standards and product support into this unique and efficient product line."
The WE series wheel loaders have a fully regenerated SR hybrid drive system. During braking or deceleration, the electric motor becomes a generator and feeds electricity back into the electrical system. Compared with mechanically driven wheel loaders or hydraulic excavators of the same size, this can reduce fuel consumption by up to 45% and significantly reduce carbon emissions per ton.
In order to shorten the cycle time without a corresponding increase in fuel usage, the 3rd generation series of wheel loaders include a kinetic energy storage system (KESS) that works in conjunction with SR hybrid drives to store the large amounts captured from braking Horsepower and guide it to supplement the peak power requirements.
"The goal here is to maximize productivity and reduce cost per ton," said product director Jesse Dubberly. "The 3rd generation series aims to improve both aspects of this equation. Reduce cycle time and increase payload, thereby increasing productivity and moving more tonnage."
The LINCS II network control system on WE180-3 provides real-time feedback and important statistics, such as bucket height and angle, single bucket payload and total tonnage moved. This can help increase productivity by allowing operators to quickly adapt to conditions.
In order to keep the operator comfortable during shifts, the spacious environmentally controlled cab is designed to provide excellent visibility and is now a standard trainer seat. The digital joystick provides simple and responsive control, while the height-adjustable heated/cooled seat helps minimize driver discomfort.
