Vehicle features compact front end, tail swing design.

The new Cat M319 wheeled excavator features a short front-end design and tail swing to efficiently work in confined areas. Delivering up to 15 percent more swing torque than previous models, this next-gen excavator is designed to quickly get the job done. A dedicated swing pump improves operating efficiency by providing more consistent power for better multitasking capabilities.

Powered by the 128-kilowatt (171-horsepower) Cat C4.4 engine, the M319 tailors performance and production to job site needs while meeting EU Stage V and U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards, the company says. With features like Eco mode to minimize fuel consumption in less demanding applications, the excavator uses up to 5 percent less fuel than previous models, lowering long-term owning and operating costs.

The new M319 can reach speeds of 21.7 mph. With its minimal 6-foot-3-inch tail swing radius, operators can complete dig, swing and dump tasks with limited side overhang when working on tight job sites, Caterpillar says.

Its updated advanced hydraulic system is designed to deliver the optimum balance of power and efficiency while offering the control required for working precision. Auxiliary hydraulic options of high- and medium-pressure circuits with one/two-way pressure flow allow contractors to tailor machine configuration for using a wide range of Cat attachments.

Boosting efficiency and comfort, the machine’s re-engineered cab is designed to deliver a premium operator experience. It features a large touch-screen monitor with jog dial to provide intuitive navigation of machine controls. Operators can program joystick configuration and power preferences, and the new excavator recalls specific settings based on the unique operator ID.

Cab entry and exit are easier with a new tilt-up left console. Featuring advanced viscous mounts, the M319 reduces machine vibration feedback, reducing operator fatigue.

Offering double the filter life, the new M319 design synchronizes fuel filter change intervals at 1,000 hours, Cat says. Fuel integrity and machine uptime reliability are improved with two filtration stages of particles in the diesel. The hydraulic system also features advanced filtration performance with anti-drain valves that keep the oil clean during filter replacement and a 50 percent longer filter life of 3,000 hours. These features lower maintenance costs.

Cat S∙O∙S fluid sampling extraction ports, daily maintenance points and engine oil dipstick can be accessed from ground level to substantially improve maintenance efficiency, according to the company. Operators can track filter life and maintenance intervals from inside the cab via the touchscreen monitor, facilitating maintenance planning.

Enabling the pushbutton starting feature with the unique operator ID delivers an enhanced level of excavator security and operating safety for the new M319. Standard rearview, right-side cameras and large cab windows with small cab pillars help to improve job site visibility for the operator. An optional 360 visibility system combines input from multiple cameras around the machine to give operators a complete view of their surroundings. The excavator’s new flat engine hood design also improves visibility, according to the manufacturer.

The company’s facility in Modesto, California, earned NAID’s endorsement for facility-based hard drive and solid-state drive destruction.

Harsco Corp., a Camp Hill, Pennsylvania-based provider of environmental solutions for industrial and specialty waste streams, has announced that its Clean Earth division’s facility in Modesto, California, has received a facility-based operation endorsement for physical hard drive and solid-state drive destruction from the Phoenix-based National Association for Information Destruction (NAID). NAID offers an accreditation program for verifying data destruction service provider compliance in accordance with data protection regulations and security standards related to the physical destruction of hard drives and solid-state drives.

Harsco says its Clean Earth facility in Modesto received certification approval July 16 after completing internal process audits and enhancing security features, including security cameras, badge access and alarm systems. Clean Earth is a large specialty waste company that provides remediation, disposal, recycling and beneficial reuse solutions for hazardous and nonhazardous materials. Harsco says Clean Earth operates a network of 91 locations across the U.S.

According to a news release from Harsco, this certification verifies Clean Earth’s compliance with laws related to the protection of sensitive information on physical hard drives and solid-state devices by shredding these devices within its Modesto facility.

The company says this is the second Clean Earth facility to earn this specific NAID certification, with the first being its location in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

“Clean Earth’s electronics processing facility in Modesto is committed to establishing and maintaining security processes and procedures to enable the secure handling of hard drives and solid-state devices,” says Clean Earth President David Stanton. “Clean Earth understands how critical it is to properly manage and destroy electronics that contain sensitive data. This certification gives our customers the additional peace of mind that comes with knowing we have been audited to NAID AAA certification standards.”

The packaging company raised its prices in response to tight market conditions.

Sonoco, a global packaging producer based in Hartsville, South Carolina, has implemented a $70 per ton price increase for all grades of uncoated recycled paperboard (URB) in the United States and Canada. The company says the price increase is effective with shipments beginning Sept. 7.

The price increase comes in response to continued tight market conditions, the company states in a news release. Sonoco says strong demand across its U.S. and Canada mill network has led to order backlogs remaining at near historic highs as well as high inflationary pressures on papermaking.

The company previously increased its URB prices by $50 per ton in March as well as November 2020.

Company will oversee nonferrous separation system installation at L. Gordon Iron & Metal in North Carolina.

The Houston-based Recycling Technologies Division of Industrial Service Solutions (ISS) has been selected to design and help manufacture a shredder downstream nonferrous separation plant for L. Gordon Iron & Metal in Statesville, North Carolina. The system will be installed to operate online with the existing 80/104 shredder or as an offline operation.

Along with obtaining the highest recovery rate possible, ISS says it was challenged with placing the system in a predesignated area. According to ISS Vice President of Recycling Technologies Bill Tigner, “We worked closely with L. Gordon Iron & Metal to achieve the goals established in an area where we had to be mindful of the ferrous operation and truck traffic. Part of that solution was working with [Newburg, Oregon-based] Action Conveyors.”

The planned system will incorporate Action’s Sub Pan-free Taper Slot Screen. For the required tons per hour of Gordon’s system, the Taper Slot Screen replaces the traditional layout of initial trommel separation with a vibratory screen. “It is a unique piece of technology and equipment that is the best in the industry,” says Tigner.

Other supply partners in the system from ISS include SGM Magnetics for three eddy current separators and Denver-based Fluent Conveyor. Platforms, support towers and structures will be built at the ISS facility in Houston.

“After many years of evaluating similar projects, we were able to find the right solution for today’s market,” comments Richard Gordon, CEO of L. Gordon Iron & Metal. “The ISS team was able to design a state-of-the-art recovery system that will work seamlessly with our current operation. We are excited to be able to upgrade the nonferrous streams from our shredder and begin recovering all of the metallics that may have previously been lost in waste disposal.”

With roots tracing back to 1917, fifth-generation family business Gordon Recyclers Inc. and its L. Gordon Iron & Metal division serves customers in a wide geographic area and adjoining states with multiple locations, including its flagship 17-acre location in Statesville.

L. Gordon Iron & Metal employs roughly 100 people and operates an 80/104 automobile shredding plant, plus an 800-ton shear and several nonferrous balers. The company ships ferrous and nonferrous scrap via truck, rail, and cargo ship to numerous consuming mills worldwide.

ISS operates from more than 45 locations and has 2,500 employees offering field, shop and supply services. In support of the scrap metal industry, ISS offers stationary shredders including their castings and wear parts, AmeriMex motors and controls, emission controls, shredder explosion mitigation, the Taurus US line of scrap shears and balers and ZB Group’s Thor mobile shredder line.
