OAKLAND CITY — The Oakland City Town Council discussed a number of items at their most recent meeting last week.

The town has purchased and received a small excavator and street sweeper, which town employees have received training on. Mayor James Deffendall said that the street sweeper does have a small hydraulic leak on it, which was scheduled to be repaired. Deffendall said that the sweeper will be a big help to clean up the curbs that hadn’t been cleaned in over 30 years.

He added that the damage is done on the storm sewers, but he thinks the town is on the right track and now is the time to work on the problem underground.

A storm sewer near IGA collapsed, according to Deffendall. The hope is to replace that before new blacktop goes down. The initial projection was a 360 feet pipe replacement, but after further research, it looks like only 50 feet will need replacement.

“That’s a great savings because the alternative was over $200,000,” Deffendall said.

Deffendall spoke to contractors and received two bids for the work. The first bid was from BMD for $54,540. The second was from Naas and Sons for $30,680.

Council member AJ Cooper made a motion to award the job to Naas and Sons under the provision that they have the proper insurance and paperwork, and the motion passed.

The town is putting in place a sidewalk replacement program. The program is a first come, first serve program each year until funds run out for residents of Oakland City. Residents will obtain two quotes for sidewalk replacement, and the town will pay 50% of the lower quote. Those residents will still be able to use the higher bidding contractor, but will have to pay the difference in the quoted price.

Deffendall said that he talked to Mayor Greg Wright in Princeton and Wright told him that Princeton pays for the concrete in their program. Cooper said he likes the 50% plan better.

The town is selling a lot at the southwest corner of the four-way stop in town for $6,000 to a doctor who will be building a new office in town. The town will have some influence in the design of the building.
