Battery-powered, zero-emission ECR25 electric compact excavators and L25 electric compact wheel loaders manufactured by Volvo Construction Equipment Corporation (Volvo CE) are being used to construct a new ADA barrier-free walkway in the shelter.

The construction of this trail supports the conservation mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is responsible for the management of the National Wildlife Refuge System-a network of 567 shelters throughout the United States that provides a series of popular activities , While providing important habitats for thousands of wild animal species.

These are the first heavy electric equipment used by federal agencies in the project. The pilot helps the service explore how to minimize its carbon footprint in natural areas and reduce emissions while maintaining public land. It also provided Volvo CE with valuable feedback on the performance of electrical equipment.

The project supports the Biden-Harris administration’s "Beautiful America" ​​initiative, which is a local-led initiative and volunteers to work nationwide to protect, connect and restore the land, waters and wildlife on which we depend.

The work is done by a service maintenance action team that pulls skilled trade employees from various shelters for short periods of time.

Projects like the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge give us a glimpse of how motors can create a more climate-friendly future for the construction industry.

The L25 electric compact wheel loader is used to haul and lay gravel for a wheelchair-friendly half-mile trail around the pond, and to clear bushes. The ECR25 electric compact excavator is digging ditches to improve the drainage of the pond and is helping to build a viewing platform above the pond.

Volvo Motor achieves zero emissions, and the noise level is significantly lower than that of diesel engines. These qualities are especially beneficial when working in natural areas such as refuges, where there are a variety of grasslands, wetlands and woods that attract red foxes, painted turtles, ospreys, otters, and countless other species.

The project also tested Beam Global's portable EV ARCTM solar charging system to further reduce the use of fossil fuels on the site. Beam Global is a leader in the field of electric vehicle charging and has already cooperated with Volvo Construction Equipment on other projects.
